Information
Summary Status: vulnerable (Category II), because of its rapid decrease in numbers, the Desert Monitor is included in both the Red Data Book of the USSR and in the Red Data Book of the IUCN. This lizard is the only representative of its family inhabiting the Kyzyl Kum Desert. The principal causes of its decline are the destruction of its core habitat and the killing by man. To preserve the desert monitor, it is necessary to create a reserve area in the eastern Kyzyl Kum Desert and to conduct research on methods of captive and artificial breeding. It is also necessary to promote the protection of this species and to control hunting of it.
