Information
Summary Status: endangered (Category I), and pro-bably already extinct, it has not been seen in Kazakstan for 20 years. The marbled duck was formerly found along the Syr Darya River, in the Caspian Sea region and between the Volga and Ural Rivers. For unknown reasons, its flock size has been greatly reduced everywhere. During the 1970s only 2,000 birds were known to have wintered in Turkey. Special searches for this duck should be undertaken in Kazakstan and other Central Asian countries and studies should be conducted to determine the causes of its drastic population decline. Following such studies, appropriate conservation measures should be developed and implemented.
