Information
Summary Status: vulnerable (Category II), decreasing in number and range occurring mainly in the Lake Balkhash Basin. According to the latest information, it now lives in Chornya Rechka (Chu Valley) and Charyn River. This frog has now disappeared from, or is very rarely seen in the Ili, Almaty, Kaskelen and Chemolgan Rivers and in the city of Almaty and its suburbs where it was once found. It is probable that the more aggressive marsh frog (Rana ridibunda) has replaced it over much of its original range. Captive and artificial breeding have not been attempted. As a protective measure, a re-serve area should be created near the Charyn Ash-tree Grove on the Charyn River. It is also necessary to carry out educational and informational work among the population.
