Information
Summary Status: endangered (Category I), apparently disappearing in Kazakstan. A sufficient number of these birds still can be found in Uzbekistan. The white stork nests only in the far southern areas of Shymkent and Zhambyl regions where no more than 15 to 30 pairs have been observed. Its numbers apparently continue to decline. The white stork lives near human settlements and often depends entirely on humans for food. It is disappearing due to the reduction of available forage caused by a decrease in the number of small ponds and lakes. The careless use of chemical pesticides has also contributed to population declines. To prevent the extinction of this species, every known nest should be protected.
