Information
Summary Status: endangered (Category I), it once inhabited many ponds and lakes in Kazakstan where fish for food and trees for building nests were plentiful. Now the osprey nests only in specific areas including Lake Markakol in the southern Altai mountains and along the Ural, Irtysh and Ili Rivers. The population has declined dramatically to only 30 or 35 pairs, with about one half of them found in eastern Kazakstan. The main limiting factors are destruction of forests, reductions in stocks of forage fish and the shooting of adult birds. It is necessary to carry out a long-term survey of individual nests and monitor reproductive success. Protective zones should be created around each nest.
