Information
Summary Status: vulnerable (Category II), decreasing in numbers along the borders of its range. It nests among the reedy overgrowth in the vast delta of the Volga River and along the lower reaches of the Ural River where about 1000 pairs breed annually. Formerly, a few birds nested along the lower Syr Darya River. The basic limiting factors are changes in water quality and quantity due to irrigation, poaching (for feathers), and destruction of nests by predatory birds. The creation of a reserve is urgently required to protect the nesting places of the Squacco Pond-heron.
