| Summary | Status: indeterminate (Category IV), this is an insufficiently studied species. It is dis-tributed on the southern Mangyshlak Peninsula, in the Talas, Kyrgyz and Zaili Alatau mountains, as well as in the Karatau and Chu-Ili mountains. Indian crested porcupines live in the foothills of mountains, forests and steppe. The population of this species is extremely small. Although there is no exact information about its population in Kazakstan, in 1983, more than 200 burrows were found in the Karatau mountains. Basic limiting factors are heavy snow fall and frozen ground, as well as the agricultural development of core habitat areas. The Indian crested porcupine is kept in the Almaty, Shymkent and Karaganda Zoos and in the Seismology Institute. No special protection measures have been implemented. To protect this animal, it is necessary to create a reserve in the Kyrgyz Range in the valley of the Karakystak River. |
