Summary | Status: rare (Category III), it is endemic to southeastern Kazakstan. It inhabits clayey deserts and semideserts from the Karsakpay and Daryalyk Deserts in the west to the Alakol and Zaisan Lakes region in the east. Currently, scientists are aware of only 40 individuals that were found using nonstandard methods, primarily in the Betpak Dala steppe. This species hibernates in winter. Captive breeding has not been successful. To protect this rare animal it is necessary to forbid the cutting of endemic vegetation in the Betpak Dala steppe. |
