Summary | Status: endangered (Category I), it is dis-tributed on the Mangyshlak Peninsula and the Ustyurt Plateau where it lives in sandy areas covered with saxhaul trees and bushes. In Kazakstan, there are only a few dozen individuals left. The main factors limiting the caracal distribution are severe winters and poaching. Captive breeding of this species has been developed. It is protected in the Ustyurt Reserve and two other reserves. To help to preserve this species protected territories should also be set up in the Mangystau Region. |
