Summary Status: rare (Category III), decreasing in number and habitat. It is distributed in the Tian Shan, Dzhungar Alatau, Tarbagatai and Saur mountains, as well as in forests and brushy areas in the sub-alpine belts. About 10 specimens live in the Almaty Reserve. Basic limiting factors are reduction of forage and poaching. This cat is pro-tected in two reserves and four preserves. Hunting of this lynx has been banned since 1976. To help ensure the survival of this species, it is necessary to create a reserve in the Dzhungar Alatau mountains and also to improve protection measures in the existing reserves.
