Summary | Status: rare (Category III), range and population size are decreasing. It is distributed in the Tian Shan, Altyn Yemel, Toksanbai and Kaikan mountains. This bear inhabits fir and deciduous forests and mountain meadows. Its population was larger near the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Currently about 300 bears live in the Dzhungar Alatau mountains. In the Tian Shan moun-tains within Kazakstan about 200 bears have been counted. Factors contributing to its disappearance are poaching and human activities. Three bears are kept in the Almaty Zoo and they are also protected in the Aksu-Dzhabagly and Almaty Reserves. The creation of a reserve in the Dzhungar Alatau mountains and intensification of protective measures are necessary to ensure the survival. |
