Summary | Status: rare (Category III), inhabiting limited areas within the basins of Lake Alakol and the Ili River. The main factors limiting the population of this lizard include the secondary salination of its habitat due to irregular fluctuations of water level in the Ili River and Kapshaghai Lake and the collection of saxhaul for firewood and fires. Artificial and captive breeding have not been done. The western part of the va-riegated toad agames prime habitat in the Ili River drainage will be included within the proposed Altynemel National Nature Reserve. It is necessary to develop methods of breeding and to promote protection of this species. |
