Summary Status: rare (Category III) with narrow range of habitat, but endemic throughout Kazakstan. It inhabits an area from the southeast shore of the Caspian sea and the eastern Ustyurt Plateau in the west to the Dzhungar foothills in the east, and the Syr Darya River valley in the south to Lakes Balkhash and Zaisan in the north. Nesting areas include deserts and the valleys of desert rivers. In the desert mountains of Kazakstan this pigeon has always been common, but in the last 20 to 25 years numbers have been declining. Basic limiting factors have not been studied and it is not protected. It is necessary to create protected territories in nesting areas and to forbid hunting of the eastern stock pigeon.
