Summary Status: rare (Category III), significantly reduced population. It nests in northern, central and eastern Kazakstan, in the Caspian Sea region and Lake Alakol. The feruginous pochard also winters over in small numbers on water bodies in the south, southeast and southwest. The total population is not known. Limiting factors have not been studied, but the observed rapid decline in population requires that specialists give urgent attention to the basic biology of this duck. Reserves should be created to protect this and other waterfowl. In addition, hunting of this species should be prohibited.
