Information
Summary Status: endangered (Category I), threatened with imminent extinction. An ancestor of the Chinese domestic goose, the swan goose was once widespread in Siberia but is now found only in the Toreiskie Lakes region east of Lake Baikal. In Kazakstan, this goose used to nest near Lake Zaysan and along the Irtysh River. This large swan usually nests deep in bulrushes and reeds along the shores of mountain lakes. Its total population has decreased dramatically. During the last 30 years it has been observed only twice in Kazakstan, once in 1967 and once again in 1978. Captive breeding for re-entry into the wild is urgently needed.
