Information
Summary Status: endangered (Category I), sporadically distributed, its number is rapidly declining. In Kazakstan, the white-headed duck nests in the northern part of the territory, preferring vast, deep lakes full of aquatic plants. The size of its population is unknown, but is estimated at no more than a few hundred individuals. The main reason for its population decline is the general deterioration of living conditions in the reed beds due to fishing, fires, harvesting of the reeds and frequent fluctuations in water levels. To adequately protect this bird, it is necessary to create reserves in the lower Torgai River and at Lake Chany. These reserves should be developed as soon as possible.
