Summary | Status: vulnerable (Category II), rare with narrow range and declining numbers. This large goose nests on the Siberian tundra. Flocks pass through Kazakstan in autumn and spring during annual migrations. The red-breasted goose is often found on the lakes of northern and western Kazakstan where in the 1970s it numbered between 1,000 and 10,000. Following a significant decline in numbers, in recent years the population has begun to increase again. It is necessary to create a comprehensive system of reserves along the migration flight paths of the red-breasted goose and other migratory waterfowl lest they become extinct. |
