Summary Status: vulnerable (Category II), in Kazakstan the population is estimated to be about 30,000 individuals. In other parts of Central Asia this bustard is considered endangered. It inhabits desert and semi-desert zones throughout the southern half of the plains of Kazakstan. The Houbara bustard is protected only in the Ustyurt Reserve, where a small portion of its total population is found. It is necessary to create reserves in the Betpak Dala Desert and in the Kyzyl Kum Desert and to intensify efforts to protect this bird from poaching.
