After the agricultural development of virgin lands during the 1950s this bustard disappeared from its original habitat areas. The current size of the population in Kazakstan is unknown, but it used to be rather common. Today the great bustard is very seldom seen and when observed usually doesnt exceed groups of about 18 individuals. It is necessary to organize protected territories in the steppe zone of Kazakstan to help ensure the survival of this species. |
