Summary Status: rare (Category III), declining in number. It is distributed in the forests, tundra and forest-steppe of Eurasia. The common crane winters in northern Africa and south Asia. In Kazakstan, it inhabits the eastern and southeastern portion of the country. Nesting areas are marshland and shallow wetlands. Some 30 years ago, the common crane was frequently seen in northern Kazakstan. In the 1970s to 1980s, its numbers declined. Currently there are only a few 10s of pairs nesting in Kazakstan. This bird is easily bred artificially. No special protection measures have been created in Kazakstan. Special reserves in northern parts of Kazakstan should be created to protect this crane.
