Information
Summary Status: endangered (Category I), endemic to southern Russia and Kazakstan where it is distributed throughout the northern steppe zone. Its total number is not known, but it is rapidly and steadily decreasing in all parts of the steppe desert. The basic limiting factors include the ploughing of the steppe lands for agricultural use, other kinds of transformations to the steppe landscape, the open range grazing of cattle, shooting and the agricultural use of pesticides and herbicides. Developing eco-logically sound agricultural practices and providing environmental information and education to the local people will increase the chances of survival of this species.
