Summary | Status: endangered (Category I), dramatically reduced in number in the last 3 to 4 years in Kazakstan. This graceful raptor was once quite common and stable, but is now threatened with extinction in Ka-zakstan. The Saker falcon inhabits forest-steppe, steppe and desert zones of Eurasia and mountainous areas in the southern and eastern regions of Kazakstan. The basic limiting factors are poaching and trapping. During 1992 to 1994 settled populations of this raptor were trapped by hunters for sale in Arabian countries. This falcon is protected in the Aksu-Dzhabagly, Naurzum and Ustyurt Nature Reserves and in the Altyn Yemel National Park. It is necessary to completely forbid trapping of this bird in Kazakstan, as well as in Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Syria. Nature reserves should also be created in the Karatau mountains, on the Betpak Dala steppe and along the Ili River. Artificial breeding methods should also be developed. |
