Summary Status: endangered (Category I), distributed in the mountains of Northern Africa and Central Asia. In Kazakstan, the Barbary falcon is found in the mountains and foothills between the Talas Alatau and the southern Altai ranges. It probably inhabits the Kyzyl Kum desert, the west shore of the Aral sea and the Ustyurt foothills. This falcon also nests in dry desert mountains and river canyons. Its population is unknown. From 1984 to 1989 no decrease in population was observed. Limiting factors have not been studied. In the Almaty Zoo there are 2 pairs of this falcon. An additional pair is located in the Sunkar Garden. Measures of protection include creating a reserve along the Ili River, protecting nests, artificial breeding and educating people to protect raptors.
