Information
Summary Status: vulnerable (Category II), rarely observed and declining in number. It is widespread in Eurasia, southern Central Asia and Mongolia. In the first half of the 20th century, this eagle was common near many water reservoirs in Kazakstan, but in the last 30 to 40 years it has not been seen in a number of places. The white-tailed sea-eagle nests in forests and reeds along the shores of rivers that are rich with fish. At present 95 to 110 pairs are nesting in Kazakstan along the Ural and Ili Rivers and near Lakes Balkhash and Alakol. Basic limiting factors are the direct destruction of nests, death by poisoned baits and wild fires. The creation of Pribalkhash, Alakol and Torgai Nature Reserves and educating people will help protect this species.
