Summary | Status: rare (Category III), declining in number. It is widespread in Africa, Sou-thern Europe and Asia. In Kazakstan, the Egyptian vulture inhabits spurs of the Tian Shan, the Dzhungar Alatau mountains, the Ustyurt Plateau and the Mangyshlak Peninsula. This vulture nests in rocky areas of low desert mountains or in the dry foothills of big mountain ranges, and near wetlands. Nests are often found close to human settlements. The number of this species is unknown, but most likely is less than a few hundred nesting pairs. Basic limiting factors include poaching and deaths by traps and poisoned baits. To preserve this species it is necessary to create reserves in the Karatau mountains and in the valley of the Ili River. Additional controls are also required to curb the illegal killing of this species. |
