Information
Summary Status: vulnerable (Category II), rare and decreasing in number and area. The pink flamingo nests in three areas in Kazakstan. The most northern nesting area is in north central Kazakstan on Lake Tengiz (Akmola Region) where between 5,000 to 9,000 (1972 to 1976) and 54,600 (1979) birds were counted. Nesting occurs on the shores of broad saline lakes in steppe and semi-desert areas. Main factors limiting population expansion include reduction of suitable nesting habitat and direct disturbance of flocks by human activity. The pink flamingos are protected in the Kurgaldzhin Nature Reserve at Lake Tengiz. Additional protected habitat areas should be created along the lower reaches of the Torgai River in Central Kazakstan and at nesting sites on the northeastern coast of the Caspian Sea.
