Information
Summary Status: vulnerable (Category II), rapidly decreasing in number. The glossy ibis has an isolated, sporadic distribution. In Kazakstan, in the middle of the last century, it inhabited the Aral Sea region, the Torgai Lakes drainage basin and the coastal plain of Lake Balkhash. Colonies of this species are now found only in reed beds of the north Caspian coastal plain. In one colony approximately 173 glossy ibis nests were found. The basic factors limiting this species are changes in the water levels near the nesting areas, destruction of reed beds, wild fires, and hunting. The creation of adequate reserve areas for this species is important.
