Summary | Status: vulnerable (Category II), a resident of coastal freshwater areas, the population has never been large in Kazakstan and is now decreasing rapidly. Habitats include the entire Aral Sea Basin up to the Chu River. Adults can reach 70 cm and 5 kg and live up to 10 years. Artificial cultivation attempts have not been undertaken. Studies on the Turkestan barbels reproductive biology, including hybridization with the marinka and the Aral barbel, need to be expanded and protective measures need to be increased. |
