Summary | Status: endangered (Category I), on verge of extinction (or already extinct). The Aral sturgeon formerly inhabited the Aral Sea and its tributaries, but reduced water levels and the subsequent progressive increase in salinity has destroyed the sturgeons habitat. It is possible that specimens could be reintroduced from closely-related populations in the Ural River-Caspian Sea and the Ili River - Lake Balkhash drainages. Adults grow up to 200 cm long, and weigh up to 60 kg and can live for 30 years. |
