Summary | Status: rare (Category III), it inhabits deserts of the northern shore of Lake Balkhash and possibly the Lake Alakol area. Based on population studies, the average density is one specimen per 35 km along a track. The basic limiting factors are the extent of earth freezing, summer droughts and the destruction of grasses that are forage for this rodent. Several specimens were bred in captivity, but it reproduced very slowly. Until further details of the natural history of this species are known, nature reserves should be created in the Bektauat and Shubartau mountains. |
