Summary Status: rare (Category III), it is endemic to the southeastern Aral Sea area. It is distributed in the northwestern and northern Kyzyl Kum Desert along the ancient bed of the Zhanadarya River. Its population is very small in Kazakstan and other areas within its range. Basic limiting factors have not been identified. It resides in permanent colonies and hibernates in winter. Neither protection, nor captive breeding efforts have been undertaken. It is recommended that a reserve be established to protect this species.
