Summary | Status: rare (Category III), it is endemic to the northern Aral Sea area and the southern desert and the valleys of Lake Balkhash area. This rodent inhabits the valleys of the Aral Kara Kum Desert, Bolshoy and Maliy Barsuki, and Ili-Karatal Rivers. The population size of this species is very small and fluctuates annually. The basic limiting factors have not been studied. It has been bred in captivity 3 times and 2 pairs reproduced. What protection measures are needed is not known due to the lack of information on the ecology and range of this species. |
