Summary | Status: vulnerable (Category II), rapidly decreasing in number. This species nests in very restricted specific locations. Once widespread in Kazakstan, scattered nests may now be found in western, eastern and southeastern Kazakstan and occasionally on the lower reaches of the Sary Su and Syr Darya Rivers. Colonies inhabit reedy overgrowth. The overall number in Kazakstan today is estimated at no more than 650 pairs. Basic factors limiting this species are changes in water levels, destruction of reed beds, wild fires, and hunting. The creation of adequate reserve areas for this species is important. |
