Summary | Status: rare (Category III), Its range and population size in some areas are increa-sing. This subspecies of sheep inhabits the Kazak uplands, the northern shore of Lake Balkhash and the Kalbin Altai, Tarbagatai, Monrak and Saur mountains. The total number of this subspecies has increased from 7,000 in the 1970s to 11,800 in the 1990s. Limiting factors are poaching, severe winters and the reduction of forage due to cattle grazing. This sheep is being bred in the Almaty and Karaganda Zoos. It is protected in some nature reserves, including the Tarbagatai and Ermentau Republican Preserves. It is necessary to intensify protection of this sheep in the existing reserves and to create new reserves in the Kalbin Altai mountains and the Kazak uplands. Introduction of this sheep in the Uly Tau mountains will also contribute to its restoration. |
