Summary Status: endangered (Category I), this species actually disappeared from Kazakstan in the mid 1950s. Currently a group of reintroduced deer inhabits an area along the middle Ili River. The total popu-lation size in Kazakstan is estimated at 200 individuals. The basic limiting factors are excessive agricultural activities and poaching. A captive breeding program is being successfully carried out in the Almaty Zoo. The deer is protected in the Karachingil State Hunting Preserve. It is necessary to reintroduce this species along the Syr Darya River and in the delta of the Ili River and to create reserves in these areas.
