Summary | Status: vulnerable (Category II), its range and population size are rapidly decreasing. This sheep is distributed in the Tian Shan, Chu-Ili and Dzhungar Alatau mountains at altitudes of 200 to 4,000 meters above sea level. The total population in Kazakstan is about 1,600 individuals. Basic limiting factors are poaching and encroachment of forage areas by domestic cattle. It is being bred in the Almaty and other zoos. This sheep is protected in the Aksu-Dzhabagly Reserve, in the Altyn Yemel National Park Reserve and in other nature reserves. To ensure its survival, the Dzha-baglytau mountains should be included in the Aksu-Dzhabagly Reserve and the Dzhungar Alatau Reserve should be established. |
