Summary | Status: rare (Category III), restricted to its narrow endemic habitat in the Dzhungar Alatau mountains. Irregular changes in water levels and the pollution of ponds as the result of pasturing of cattle are the main factors responsible for the decline of this salamander. To ensure the survival of this species it will be necessary to provide a fully protected area within the existing Verkhne-Koksu Preserve where all human activities are prohibited. It is also necessary to develop methods of artificial and captive breeding. Study of the distribution and the monitoring of the status of this species in connection with the level of anthropogenic impact should be continued. |
