Summary | Status: endangered (Category I), endemic subspecies, rarely seen and inadequately studied, the Chu ostroluchka may already be extinct. It is the only member of its genus to inhabit the Aral Sea Basin. Its habitat used to include the Chu River Basin downstream from the city of Bishkek. This fish reaches 15.7 cm in length and weighs 200 to 250 grams. Since 1960, there has been no reliable information on this small fish and searches for specimens in its core habitat between 1990 and 1993 were unsuccessful. Artificial reproduction has not been attempted and no protective measures have been instituted. |
